It’s been over 9 months since my dad passed away. It’s been over 5 years since I found out he had dementia. This has been a long time coming but I think I’m starting to make peace with it.
My dad lived until he was 67 years old. I have friends from college that didn’t even make it to half that. His brother, Warren, passed away from an motorcycle accident at the age of 20. He barely lived a third of the years my dad did.
My dad graduated high school, served in the Navy, married his high school sweetheart (married 45 years this year), volunteered with his church and Boy Scouts, and supported his family. He was never much for sentimental moments, but I think reflecting on his life, he was proud of what he did.
Even though he never got to truly retire, I don’t he would have ever stopped working. That’s just who he was. There is always something to get done.
I still wish we could have debriefed about his life before the dementia took his mind. But I know that he probably would not have said too much. I’m okay with that now.
