Doney Doney Donuts

My oldest kid, Charlotte, likes to make up funny names for foods she really, really enjoys.

Sundays with Dad

When I was growing up Sunday mornings were spent with Dad and usually my brother, Scott, getting the church ready for the weekly services and Sunday school. My dad always seemed to be doing something: working, volunteering with the church or Boy Scouts. As a reward for getting up early on a Sunday and helping out, we got to enjoy the donuts the opening crew brought in. There was always a wide variety of donuts. Glazed, powdered, round and stick shaped, creme filled and more.

Do What You Can

Those mornings with Dad taught me a lot about work ethic and to do what you can to help out. Working 45+ minutes from where I live has made it very difficult to give my time to my community. An eight and a half hour day and more than an hour and a half in the car leaves little time for family and myself. Honestly, it has been nice being able to eliminate my commute and spend more time where I call home. I’ve saved about 10 days so far while working from home. You can read more about my work from home experience. I often wonder if others are experiencing the same situation. Maybe that is another reason why volunteerism rates are going down.

Our Father

Religion was rarely something we discussed as a family outside of Sundays. I know it helped shape who I am but it always felt odd and forced. I still believe in right and wrong, and the triumph of good over evil, and the Golden Rule. I do not need to believe in an all knowing being to keep me from being nice to others and doing the right thing. I understand that some people do and that’s okay. I think what is most important is that we respect each other. You will not find me yelling or screaming at you because you have different beliefs than me. We are all different for a reason and that is great. We need people with all kinds of views and skills.

A Seat At the Table

In the few months leading up to the election, several people have expressed their displeasure with some political signs in front of our house. We put them up about three months prior to the election and took them down a few days after the election. I think 3 months of free candidate advertising is more that enough. I think the signs supporting candidates are silly and just draw unwanted attention. I was correct but for this election, I felt I could make an exception. I stand by that decision.

We have had one person in particular come by our house yelling and screaming about the signs in our front yard. This person lives in town and seems to go out of their way to harass us. They even park across from our house at night with their lights shining towards the front window. I will give credit where credit is due, they do not harass us when the kids are with us outside. I know we are all going through our own challenges and may direct our anger at people who are not our enemy. I wish no harm to this person just that they get through whatever ever it is they are going through.

Final Thoughts

Did you think there would be more about donuts? Me too. I think we should all go make or eat some donuts tomorrow in the spirit of togetherness while so many of us are spending time away from each other for the good of our collective health.

Remember, you will never hear about what a majority of people are doing in the news if it does not capture enough attention. You will not see, “Tonight at 7: Jane and John Doe got up, went to work, came home, and was nice and respectful all day just like millions of other people” on the evening news. I think the world would be a whole lot better if that was the typical news cycle though.
